ARM-UP, SPREAD OUT

To be an effective soldier, you need to own a gun. The enemy will have guns, and another gun is the only thing that can combat it. I will list a few good sources to acquire cheap, yet very effective firearms.

Firstly, you need to be familiar with your rifle. You should have a rifle, and a pistol as a backup, and a decent-sized knife, sheathed, at least 7 inches. Serrated or not is your choice. Be aware that serrations on blades tend to catch on the clothing of the person you are stabbing. I strongly advise a fine, double-edged dagger. These can be had very cheaply, and easily.  Www.Budk.com   $15.00 will be more than sufficient.

Rifles-  You will have to choose your rifle very carefully. Life and death decisions are made at the cash register more often than you may think. The cheapest and most reliable rifle i know of, is the Mosin Nagant. It is a bolt-action rifle, with a 5 round magazine. It can be found readily available at www.jgsales.com for $79.00. Yes, seventy-nine dollars. It shoots the 7.62 x 54R cartridge.  This round has excellent armor-piercing capabilities, and is very cheap. The ballistics are close to the common .308 caliber round. This rifle will serve you well, and has proven itself over time. Vascilli Imrerev from the Soviet Union carried the scoped version of this rifle, and is credited with over 500 kills. You will see this rifle in the movie Enemy at the Gates. Most rounds sold for this weapon are armor-piercing, and will shoot through helmets, body armor, flak vests, strike plates, engine blocks, walls, and just about anything else under 1/2" solid carbon steel. That being said, it is also effective beyond 400 yards, which makes it ideal vs. things like the AR-15, which are primarily used in close quarters combat.

Semi-Autos: This one is difficult to approach because of the many varied opinons on the subject. As the test of time has shown, the AK-47 and 74 are undoubtably the most reliable and maintenence-free rifles one can own. The M-4, AR-15, and other AR-style rifles are very reliable, under ideal conditions. Seeing as how you will more than likely have your hands full in the field, I advise you purchase an AK-style rifle, for 3 primary reasons:

1.) Reliability. The AK has legendary reliabilty. AR's do not. The difference between life and death will most often lie with how your weapon functions, and if it will fire on command, everytime, and not jam. That being said, you can most definately have an AR and be fine.  When you drop your rifle in the mud after almost getting killed by a 120mm shell that landed near you, i hope it still shoots. You can find very cheap AK-style weapons on www.JGSALES.com from 399.00 to about 799.00 Most are under 500.00

2.) Cost.  The AK-style rifle is usually less than half the price of an AR-style one. Additionally, the AK ammo is also less than half of the price, and is extremely abundant, and easy to reload. If you are like me, you want a reliable weapon for not alot of money. Face it, we all dont want to spend our life savings on a flashy gun with picatinny rails and flashlights and lasers all over it. We need rifles that work, and reliably, for cheap. Period.

3. Firepower. The AR rifles have amazing firepower. No doubt. The .223/5.56 NATO round has decent range, excellent ballistics, and is often times much more accurate than the 7.62x39mm round of the AK-style rifles. Bullet for bullet, the .223 is fast, and lethal. The 7.62 round, has much more of a kick, and packs more of a close-range punch than the .223 round. It is often steel-core, which gives it excellent armor-piercing capabilities. The knockdown power of the 7.62 is also much more than that of the .223. My best advice, is that if you are using an AR rifle, you can scope it with a red-dot sight, and engage targets further away than the AK, so I would use it for that, as well as close range encounters. The AK specializes in face to face combat. If you have an AK, i'd wait for a door to fly open, and just let the enemy have fun eating your lead hailstorm of steel-cored bullets.

Bolt-Action: These rifles are primarily used for long-range engagements, and sniping. If used enmasse, they can also be a very formidable force. If you have a bolt action rifle, .223 or above, i suggest scoping it with at least a 9x40 scope, and using it to pick off high-profile targets at ranges greater than 100 yards. I would suggest a ghillie suit, or bushrag cover if you are going to be attacking from a vegitated area. Otherwise, keep at least 6 feet back from any window in a house, and snipe from there. Be sure to open all of the windows in adjacent houses, and the one you are hiding in. This will cause confusion as to where you are located. Otherwise, they will just open fire on the only open window, most likely taking you out. Snipers are a very effective anti-morale force. There is nothing worse than losing men to a single trained sniper, and not being able to find him. I will also add that you need to purchase an emergency heat blanket. They are very shiny, almost like aluminum foil. These can be used to keep you warm, but their main purpose is to defeat heat-signature detecting devices, so you can remain hidden. It reflects the IR beam back to the source. So instead of showing up bright red and white when a predator drone flies over your positon, you are covered by your blanket+vegitation, you wont get blown to hell by a missile. Whew.
